New boat rules in force today

The Otago harbourmaster's boat has not come in time for today's new lifejacket rules, but do not think that means you will get away with breaking them.

''We can see from the shore with binoculars, or as boaties arrive to dock, whether they are wearing or carrying lifejackets,'' harbourmaster Steve Rushbrook said.

The Otago Regional Council's new navigation safety bylaw takes effect today, including the requirement for compulsory use of lifejackets for passengers on boats under 6m.

All recreational vessels now need names or numbers displayed for identification and new animal conduct rules have been introduced.

Initially, the harbourmaster's new vessel was meant to be ready in time for the regulations but it will now

be launched in Dunedin at an event on May 21.

Comments

What are the new rules and how are boaties being made aware of them? As registered owners of a boat trailer (NB neither boats themselves nor owners are required to be registered), should we not have received some information or advice about the changes?
