Motorists in Dunedin were much less likely to be pinged for parking offences last year than a year earlier.

The number of tickets issued by council staff fell by a quarter, plunging from 41,344 in 2023 to 30,763 last year, it has been revealed. The Dunedin City Council said this reflected the number of enforcement staff dropping from eight to five.

However, enforcement revenue was slightly up, increasing from $1,988,466 to $2,195,249.

George St had the most infringement notices issued last year, with 2004, followed by Frederick St (1889) and Moray Pl (1458).

The council made parking fine statistics available to the Otago Daily Times after a Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act request.

There were 3738 requests for tickets to be waived and this was accepted or approved in 988 cases, the council said.

Monthly data showed the issuing of infringement notices was quite steady through 2024, ranging between 1997 in September and 3642 in May. April was next highest, with 3471 tickets, followed by August (2743).

In 2023, differences between months were more marked.

May had the highest tally, just like last year, and the total reached 5324 in the month.

March was next highest in 2023, with 4992 tickets issued, followed by November (4214).

January had the lowest 2023 total — 1455.

It is expected the redevelopment of George St, and other streets in the retail quarter, would have influenced the distribution of tickets.

Construction work began in the area in September 2021 and finished in May last year.
