Officer facing 'serious allegation' resigns

An Otago policeman has resigned and will appear in court after an accusation he made an intimate recording of a young girl.

The man faces one charge of making an intimate visual recording relating to the allegation, police say.

Inspector Olaf Jensen told the Otago Daily Times the constable had been charged.

A ''serious allegation'' had been made against the man.

The man was off-duty when the offending allegedly took place, Insp Jensen told the ODT.

He would not comment on the nature of the alleged offence or when the man resigned and would not be drawn further on the matter.

''We aren't able to comment further at this time as the matter is before the court, but may be in a position to comment further once the matter is concluded.''

It is understood the man had spent more than a decade with the police force.

He could face up to three years' imprisonment if convicted. The man is scheduled to appear in the district court on Tuesday.
