Despite a break in some of the worst weather on Saturday, few people were brave enough to enter the water at St Clair Beach, and only the odd person took a stroll.
St Clair Surf Life Saving Club patrol captain Graeme Newton said there had been only a ''handful'' of swimmers in the water, but the life-savers were keeping watch over their stretch of coastline.
The lack of beach-goers did give life-savers time to practise their skills and ''eat Christmas cake'', Mr Newton said.
Member Geoff Kemp predicted things would change as soon as the weather improved.
St Clair surf life-saver Ossian Woods said St Clair Beach was empty again yesterday as the ''misty, overcast and windy'' weather conditions and ''rough'' sea were ''not ideal'' for enticing people to the beach.
