Spat on after intervening

A Dunedin man who intervened when a group of about 20 teenagers were causing a ruckus at the George St McDonald’s was spat on and had soap squirted on him.

The group was "being a nuisance, and abusing staff and customers" about 6.30pm on Thursday, when the man intervened and asked the group to settle down.

As a result, he was spat on and squirted with soap by two of the teenagers, including a 14-year-old girl.

When police arrived, they realised the girl was in breach of her bail conditions, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said.

The girl attempted to flee, but officers gave chase and arrested her.

She was taken to Dunedin Central Police Station, where she allegedly assaulted two police officers.

The teen was held overnight and appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday charged with assault, disorderly behaviour and two charges of assaulting police. — APL
