ORC discontinuing its climate booklet

The Otago Regional Council is about to cease publication of a booklet that provides climate and pasture information.

The Otago Climate and Pasture Outlook has been published for about 10 years, with more than 1000 copies printed each month.

Environmental Information and Science director John Threlfall said the glossy booklet of about 20 pages was an expensive operation and feedback from farmers was that it was not being utilised by many.

Some of the information it provided could be gained from other sources, but the more recent historical data, including soil moisture, degree days and ground water levels, were not yet readily available elsewhere, he said.

"If some of these data are useful, they could be offered via the website."

It had been decided to stop printing the Outlook but still make it available on the council's website, he said.

People on the Outlook's mail and email list would be notified of the changes and feedback would be requested to help gauge the interest for future information.

Based on the feedback, a decision would be made on what form information, if any, could be supplied in the future, Mr Threlfall said.

Chairman Stephen Woodhead said while there was good information in the Outlook, "in this day and age" people expected to be able to source such information electronically, which was cheaper and more effective for all.
