Otago graduate elected university president

A University of Otago graduate has been appointed president of Hawaii Pacific University.

Dr Geoffrey Bannister studied for his bachelor and master of arts, in geography, at Otago University in the 1960s.

Born in England, Dr Bannister takes up the new role on July 1, for which he leaves Butler University, Indianapolis, after 12 years as president.

Previously, he was dean of liberal arts, and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, at Boston University.

An advocate for international education, Dr Bannister served as president of Study Abroad Foundation and Cultural Experiences Abroad, and was founding president of the Forum on Education Abroad.
