Otago graduates win law awards

Three of the four latest New Zealand Law Foundation national award recipients are University of Otago law graduates.

Law faculty marketing and communications co-ordinator Lauren Hall described the Otago success at the recent annual foundation law awards at Te Papa, Wellington as an ``impressive outcome''.

The foundation's International Research Fellowship was won by Michael Cameron, who is lead legislation solicitor at the Department of Corrections.

This fellowship is the country's premier legal research award and is valued at up to $125,000 each year.

Mr Cameron will undertake research on ``Realising the Potential of Autonomous Vehicles in New Zealand''.

Otago PhD student Kesia Sherwood was awarded a foundation doctoral scholarship to undertake research on the significance of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) on youth offending, Ms Hall said.

The foundation's latest Cleary Memorial Prize was jointly awarded to Joshua Pemberton and to Auckland lawyer Johanna McDavitt, a Victoria University of Wellington graduate.

Mr Pemberton is now studying at Harvard University in the United States.

This memorial prize is given to a young lawyer who shows outstanding promise in the profession.
