Two of Otago's brightest scholars have been recognised at a ceremony at Government House in Wellington for gaining top marks in the 2007 New Zealand scholarship examinations.

Former John McGlashan College pupil Andrew Gray scored the top mark in economics and former Mt Aspiring College pupil Laura Ferguson scored the top mark in graphics.

They were two of 28 pupils from around the country to receive awards totalling more than $390,000 at the ceremony hosted by the Governor-General, Anand Satyanand, and Minister of Education Chris Carter on Friday.

The pair were awarded Top Scholar Awards worth $2000 a year for three years, provided they maintain a B-grade average in their tertiary studies.

Andrew is studying Commerce at the University of Otago and Laura has taken a gap year before deciding what she will study at the university next year.
