Otago University in top 300 in world

The University of Otago is "very pleased" to maintain its status as one of the world's top 300 universities.

For the fifth successive year, Otago was grouped among the world's top 201 to 300 universities in the list compiled by researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Of New Zealand universities, only Auckland was ranked higher, climbing into the top 151 to 200 category this year.

Massey University, the University of Canterbury and Victoria University were listed in the 401 to 500 section.

Otago University vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne said the university was "very pleased" to maintain its top 300 position. It was particularly happy with its per capita score, which she said confirmed it as New Zealand's "most research intensive university".

It also performed well in the category which measured the number of "highly cited researchers" each institution had, she said.

Prof Hayne said the Shanghai rankings were "widely regarded as one of three major international rankings for universities". Six indicators were used to rank universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, and the number of articles published.

Havard University maintained its grip on the top ranking, which it had held since the list was first published in 2003.
