Out on a limb

Eco Tree Care arborist Donald Quayle has a great view from his office, 30m up a 150-year-old radiata pine in the Dunedin Botanic Garden on Thursday afternoon.

Garden team leader Alan Matchett said it was one of its older trees and over the past several months there had been some die-back at the top.

The die-back was being removed to reduce the risk of branches becoming brittle and falling off, possibly hitting someone.

If it was left any longer it would become more difficult to do the work.

This arborist is the real deal. He faces outward, not foolishly sitting on the end of the branch and lopping inwardly, as was once the case in the great Kelburn trimmings of yore.
