Dunedin police arrested a 32-year-old man and a 37-year-old man following the incidents near the intersection of Hope and High Sts on Saturday afternoon.
A police spokeswoman said the two alleged offenders, both Dunedin residents, threatened one victim and attempted to assault him before stealing his bag which contained shoes and socks.
``One of the men has demanded the victim's wallet but was unsuccessful,'' she said.
A second man was assaulted by the pair, police said.
``The second victim was punched but did not require an ambulance,'' the spokeswoman said.
He sustained minor injuries including bruising.
The incidents occurred between 4.45pm and 5pm.
``Around a similar time, one of the men has also tried to obtain money from other members of the public on Hope St and police would like to speak to anyone who may have information on this,'' she said.
One of the two men arrested was charged with drink-driving after being stopped by police on Sunday in Kaikorai Valley Rd.
He recorded a breath alcohol level of 578mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, more than twice the legal limit of 250mcg.
The pair were due to appear in the Dunedin District Court yesterday, but the matters were postponed until today.
Anyone who witnessed the robbery, assault or attempts to get money from members of the public should contact Dunedin police.
