Pair rescued off Karitane coast

Two people have been rescued from a sinking boat off the coast of Karitane this morning.

The pair called for help on marine radio at 8.50am from the Airini, a 5m Hartley pleasure boat.

They departed from Karitane this morning, and were about 12km off the coast when they ran into trouble.

''They radioed in to say they had lost power and were taking on water,'' Maritime New Zealand spokesman Mark Dittmer said.

Another vessel, the Road Runner, rescued the pair and their partially-submerged boat, which is being towed to shore.

''It all happened really quickly, and it was all resolved really quickly.

''It was all sorted within about 10 minutes,'' Mr Dittmer said.
