A Dunedin man was pepper-sprayed during a confrontation with police after threatening a member of the public with a knife and being suspected of drink- driving, police say.
The 47-year-old has been charged with threatening to kill, assault with a weapon, refusing to give a blood test, resisting police and refusing to accompany police after his arrest in Alva St about 11.30pm last night, Sergeant Steve Aitken said.
An incident involving threats with a knife was reported to police earlier in the night and officers later found the man driving in Alva St and suspected he had been driving while intoxicated, he said.
The man resisted police and was pepper-sprayed, Sgt Aitken said.
He was arrested and is expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court later today.
