Prominent Dunedin educator and performer Tahu Mackenzie is devastated after several of her performance outfits were stolen from the boot of her car overnight.

The 28-year-old Orokonui Ecosanctuary education officer said she went to her car on Orbell St, Dalmore about 7am this morning to find it open and a purple, hard-cover suitcase with seven performance dresses, jewellery, wigs and a selection of other pieces stolen.

Her partner's white hard-cover case was also taken but was empty.

Ms Mackenzie said the dresses had a lot of sentimental value.

"I would really, really love those outfits back no questions asked. [They are] my really, really best ones,'' she said.

"They are really precious to me and they have a lot of sentimental value.''

The dresses were easily identifiable.

A gold dress, a tiger styled outfit, a black, sparkly Indian shawl and a red rose dress were all missing as well as a gold, spider necklace.

Ms Mackenzie said she felt stupid that she had left her car unlocked as she did not think this would happen.

"I was really stupid. I feel really stupid now.''

Police had been contacted about the theft.
