Previously, temporary flagpoles, held up by guy ropes, were installed before events at the cenotaph.
The RSA Dunedin and the Dunedin RSA Welfare Trust have been working together to create a more permanent solution as part of this year’s celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Returned and Services’ Association.
A small area to the northeast of the cenotaph has been paved, and "sleeves" have been put in the ground to hold the 7m-high flagpoles.
A plaque has also been put on the site to commemorate the RSA’s 100th anniversary.
RSA Dunedin president Lox Kellas said the three flagpoles could be placed in situ for specific events such as Anzac Day, Armistice Day, Battle of Britain Day, "or any other significant event that needs to be commemorated in terms of the military history of the country".
However, they could be removed after ceremonies to maintain the amenity value of the garden and allow people to use the area for recreational purposes, he said.
RSA Welfare Trust chairman Paul Galloway said about $8000 had been received from the Bendigo and Otago Community trusts to build the memorial.
"It’s fantastic.
"It’s the fruition of several months’ work.
"It’s quite an achievement and it will provide an excellent amenity and addition to our ceremonies there — particularly the 100th anniversary celebrations."
