Pipe bands taking to the streets of Dunedin

If members of the public were upset about a lone bagpiper playing for 30 minutes in George St this month, they are in for a shock this weekend.

The Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association Otago Centre is holding its annual Octagonal Day competitions tomorrow and Sunday and 17 pipe bands from Christchurch to Invercargill are expected to compete in the city centre.

Otago centre president Lyndsay Rackley said the event would start at 12.30pm tomorrow, with a street march from Moray Pl, along George St to the Octagon, followed by the sets and medleys competition in the lower Octagon.

The day's competitions would conclude with a massed bands street march, in which 15 bands would march from the Octagon, north along George St.

On Sunday, the Otago-Southland competition will start at 9.30am with another street march from Hanover St, along George St to St Andrew St.

The pipe bands would then move to John McGlashan College for the sets, medleys, mace-flourishing, displays and the drum majors championships.
