Constable Nick Turner, of Dunedin, said police were called after receiving reports of an argument between two youths in the Dunedin Central Countdown car park near the bus hub about 2.05pm yesterday.
No injuries were reported and the parties were separated by officers, Const Turner said.
He encouraged people to call 111 if they saw suspicious incidents, even if they appeared minor in nature.
A 111 call to police was "infinitely" more efficient than coming into a police station as phone operators were trained to direct staff by radio and could relay real-time information from witnesses.
"It is far better for witnesses to stay observing the event if they feel safe to do so and relay what they are seeing over the phone," Const Turner said.
