Dunedin police are concerned that eleven people were found to be drink-driving in the city in an "extremely high result" last weekend.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson said that during a city-wide enforcement operation police stopped 2000 drivers, mostly at static test points throughout the city.

"It's pretty obvious that people are not adhering to the rules,'' Snr Sgt Thomson added.

"If you drink and drive, you're going to get caught.''

The number of people found to be over the legal breath alcohol limit at the weekend was "particularly high'' and the outcome was "disappointing''.

He acknowledged there had been extensive publicity over the years about the dangers of drink-driving and about the current breath alcohol laws.

"People are still doing it even though they know it's not the norm.''

He acknowledged that drink-driving was an important community health and safety issue, and that driving with excess breath alcohol increased the risk of crashes which could cause serious injury or death.

The overall level was clearly "too high''.

People did not have to drive after they had been drinking, and some people should think again about their drinking behaviour.

Police would be continuing their breath alcohol enforcement and people who broke the law would be caught, he said.
