Police breath-test drivers at a checkpoint in Kaikorai Valley Rd, Dunedin, last night.

Otago Coastal road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Larking said police conducted checkpoints in Dunedin last night and on Thursday.

Police apprehended three drink-drivers during the Thursday operation in Great King St.

Two people were charged with driving with a breath-alcohol level of more than 400mcg  per litre of breath and would appear in Dunedin District Court, Snr Sgt Larking said.

Another driver was issued an infringement notice and 50 demerit points for driving with a breath-alcohol level between 250mcg and 400mcg.

One man stopped by police was driving but had never held a driver’s licence.

Because he had been stopped by police previously,  his car was impounded.

On Thursday, police checked 424 vehicles and issued notices for infringements which included vehicle safety faults and breaching driver’s licence conditions.
