Few other details of the incidents were provided, but police confirmed one was solved quickly.  A man had been arrested and faced  rape charges.

Three women were attacked in two incidents in the student quarter last Friday.

The first occurred between 8pm and 8.30pm at a flat in Dundas St.

Police said a man walked into a the room where the two women were  and assaulted them.

Officers were called to the address just before 9pm.The second incident occurred sometime between 9.15pm and 9.30pm in Leith Way, less than  1km from the site of the first attack.

Despite the proximity and timing of the attacks, there was "nothing else to suggest they are related", Southern district investigations manager Detective Inspector Steve Wood said.

"Dunedin police are following strong leads in relation to a sexual attack at a Dundas St flat last weekend," he said.

"In regards to a second incident on Leith Way, police have a large amount of CCTV footage and other information to carefully review which will take some time. However, there are also some good early suspect leads in terms of this inquiry.

"The investigation teams have received excellent support from the student community."

Police would be meeting University of Otago staff on Monday to share information regarding the attacks and to ensure the safety of students, he said.

"Police have also dealt with three other sexual complaints since last Friday, one of which was quickly resolved ... with an arrest and court appearance for a man facing rape charges," he said.

"Police emphasise that they are making very good progress with all investigations and are taking  care to ensure the victims are looked after, offenders are brought to justice and any prevention opportunities are taken."
