Power cuts as wind hits Otago

Power has been cut to some consumers across Otago as strong wind gusts hit the region.

Power was earlier cut to consumers in Green Island, Abbotsford, Saddle Hill and Fairfield, but had since been restored and traffic flow was disrupted for some time after a fibre optic cable came down on to May St, in Concord, shortly after 10am.

Aurora Energy said on Facebook after midday that consumers were without power in Portobello, Company Bay and Broad Bay.

A response crew was making repairs, but it was not known when power would be restored.

Power was also cut for a time in the Cromwell area, but has since been restored.

Aurora Energy initially advised on their Facebook the Green Island, Abbotsford, Saddle Hill and Fairfield outage was due to a tree falling on a line, but later said it was still investigating the cause.

A severe weather watch for strong winds had been in place for Dunedin and other parts of Otago, but was lifted this morning.
