A long-standing secret society of pranksters from Dunedin's Selwyn College created a sticky situation for a Dunedin student yesterday - colourfully catching the attention of passers-by.

College resident Chris Collins (19), of Nelson, (right) said his Mazda Familia (above) was parked in Dundas St when it was covered with hundreds of Post-it Notes about 3am yesterday.

Members of the secret society, called The ACs, plastered the car with notes and posted a photo of it on social media.

Mr Collins saw the photo of his car when he was attending a lecture at University of Otago yesterday.

''I was surprised. I think it's really funny.''

The seven members of the secret society were ''guys and girls'' and were known pranksters.

Mr Collins was in another secret society and members met last night to plan a way to strike back.

''It's not a retaliation kind of thing. It's all fun.''

Former Selwyn College warden and now Dunedin North MP David Clark said the stickered car brought back fond memories.

''I remember finding my van in the middle of the quadrangle [at the university] wrapped in a bow on April Fools' Day one year, and there are stories from decades ago of Minis arriving on the second storey of the college.

''I thought it was refreshing to see pranks that don't involve malice or harm.''
