Predicting a soggy Christmas

Let's hope the sporting commentator’s curse extends to weather forecasters.

The MetService says the weather on Christmas Day will be pretty soggy for Otago and Southland this year.

This is where we hope the curse will kick in, giving us the opposite weather.

Meteorologist Andrew James said the lead-up to Christmas would be filled with "on-and-off showery weather" across much of the region.

Christmas Day itself was expected to be cool, wet and windy.

There was, however, some good news, he said.

"Those winds will gradually ease off during the day and those showers should clear in time for people to have an evening barbecue."

He said there was still some uncertainty about how far inland the showers would actually reach, and it was possible Central Otago would remain dry on Christmas Day.

"But definitely, those places closer to the coast will get a few showers through the day, gradually easing and clearing.

"We’re looking at a gradually improving trend throughout the day. I would say people should plan for outdoor activities in the evening, rather than the afternoon."

Mr James said it was still too early to give a credible forecast for Boxing Day, but if he had to hazard an educated prediction, he believed it would be a "decent day" across the southern region.

"There won’t be any rain, but there will be a bit of cloud around.

"This far out, it’s hard to say much more than that.

"Things could change between now and then. There’s a lot of water to come under the bridge yet"
