Emergency services were called to Maori Hill School in Dunedin yesterday afternoon, after a 10-year-old pupil injured her back when she fell off playground equipment.
A St John spokesman said they were called to the school at 1.07pm and, because the girl had a suspected back injury, it took more than an hour to get her from the scene to Dunedin Hospital.
''Her removal from the scene needed to be approached carefully to avoid causing any further injury,'' the spokesman said.
The Fire Service was also called to assist.
Principal Alistair Campbell said last night the pupil was expected to make a full recovery.
Staff had responded well to the incident, Mr Campbell said.
''Everyone followed the procedure that we had set up, which was very good,'' he said.
