Record numbers for science academy

A record 67 school pupils will next week attend a University of Otago summer camp for senior pupils from rural, small and low-decile schools throughout the country.

The Otago University Advanced School Science Academy, now in its eighth year, provides two, week-long residential camps, as well as online support throughout the year.

Four hundred senior pupils from throughout the country are this week already attending a different, more concentrated study programme, called ''Hands-on at Otago'', which is packed into a single week, and is also run by the university.

The academy aimed to provide such an education to ''passionate'' science pupils from rural, lower-decile schools, who did not ''have the same opportunities as those from higher-decile schools in our larger urban centres'', academy director Steve Broni said''
