Dunedin author Philip Temple has taken a residency at Henderson House in Alexandra, after accepting what Henderson Arts Trust board member Grahame Sydney said was a ''gold medal'' for those in the arts.

Dr Temple and his wife, fellow writer Diane Brown, moved into the house recently, after accepting the award given in recognition of those who are ''at the top of their genre''.

The author plans to work on a biography of author Maurice Shadbolt, as well as a new creative work.

Mr Sydney said the residency was not applied for but selected by the trust board. Former residents include playwright Roger Hall and short story writer Owen Marshall.
