If you have any bright ideas about the former Tomahawk School site, the Dunedin City Council would like to hear from you.
Dunedin residents will have an opportunity to share, from tomorrow, their initiatives for the use of the 1.6ha site at Ocean Grove, by making submissions to the Dunedin City Council.
Otago Peninsula Community Board deputy chairman Paul Pope said it was an exciting opportunity to be involved in the decision-making process.
"It has taken several years to get to this point, and now there is the opportunity for the Tomahawk/Ocean Grove community to engage with the council through the consultation process. The community board is very keen for the community to express its various views on what the future of the site should be.''
The school was sold by the Ministry of Education to Ngai Tahu in 2010, and was then on-sold to the council in 2012.
Council recreation planning and facilities manager Jendi Paterson said the site was not suitable for subdivision or resale, but contained several buildings that had the potential to be used for community or commercial use.
The public could visit the site from 4pm to 6pm on June 15, and 10am to noon on June 25.
The site is part of the Ocean Grove Reserve which falls within an urban landscape conservation area in the District Plan, she said.
"This means any development will have to take into account the natural landscape qualities and character of the area.''
Submissions close next month and would be assessed by staff and presented to the community and environment committee, she said.
