Roading change raises concerns over business move

Dunedin manufacturer Kaffelogic is moving to new premises in about a month.

But general manager Dean Boston says he does not know how the move will happen now as access to their current site has been affected by a roading change made without his input.

The new Dunedin Hospital is being built across from Kaffelogic in Castle St.

With access needed to the hospital site, changes have been made to Castle St, which were installed last Thursday.

It has led to the carparks on the left hand side of the road being transformed into a traffic lane — including outside Kaffelogic.

Mr Boston told the Otago Daily Times last Thursday he had not been notified or consulted about the changes and the first he knew of them was when he got to work on Thursday.

The new layout of the road made it impossible for vehicles to turn into their premises, he said.

On Friday morning a rubbish truck had come to the site and attempted to reverse in but it was impossible with the constant traffic in the newly installed lane, Mr Boston said.

There was not the time or the room to manoeuvre the truck and it ended up on the footpath, he said.

That was obviously illegal but the company had no other options.

The major worry for the company, which manufactures coffee roasting appliances, was the logistics of moving to new premises in South Dunedin in a few weeks, he said.

That would involve trucks going in and out the driveway to move large machines.

How that could be achieved in the present circumstance, he did not know.

He could not be contacted yesterday.

Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora had said last week it appeared Kaffelogic might not have been included in consultation on the road changes.

HNZ was working with the contractor to understand why and ensure appropriate follow-up.
