Robbery attempt at St Kilda dairy

A St Kilda dairy owner used an anti-theft smoke system during a robbery attempt this afternoon.

Police say they were called to the 10 O'Clock Dairy, on the corner of Prince Albert Rd and Douglas St, at 12.52pm.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two crews from St Kilda and Lookout Pt were sent a minute earlier, after reports of a fire at the dairy.

Upon arrival, it was revealed the smoke was caused by an anti-theft smoke cloaking system,  he said.

When activated, a canister of thick smoke is released, obstructing the sight of those inside.

Fire crews checked the scene was safe and the incident was handed over to police, who are making inquiries.
