Rubbish company charged over death

A refuse collection company is being prosecuted after the death of an employee in February.

The Department of Labour has charged Transpacific Industries Group (NZ) Ltd with failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of Andrew Sean John Matthew Sime, and ensuring he was not exposed to traffic hazards in his place of work.

Mr Sime (36) was struck by a van on February 5 while collecting Dunedin City Council rubbish bags near the intersection of Dukes Rd and Riccarton Rd, west of Mosgiel.

He received critical injuries and died two days later.

Investigations were carried out by the Department of Labour's occupational health and safety team and by the Commercial Crash Investigation Unit.

Transpacific's head office is in Wellington.

The charge against it was called in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday.

A company representative was not required to appear and the charge was remanded to October 13.
