A safe was stolen from the staff room at a St Clair restaurant on Sunday night, police said.
The metal safe, containing cash and an envelope of cash tips given to staff, was taken from the Esplanade Restaurant between 10.57pm and 11.08pm, Sergeant Steve Aitken said..

• A locked Musselburgh Rise house was unlawfully entered and ''ransacked'' between 4pm and 6.30pm on Saturday.
The resident returned home to find drawers had been ''gone through and ransacked''. A Toshiba laptop, Apple iPad in a red case, purple Sony digital camera, black Canon SLR camera and two lenses were stolen, Sgt Aitken said.
Police want to hear from a tall Maori woman who was in a silver/grey hatchback near the house at the time. She is of slim build, aged in her 20s or 30s, and was wearing sunglasses, a blue and white shirt and black pants.
''We are keen to talk to that person to eliminate them from our inquiries.''
• A bonsai tree has been stolen from a veranda at the front of an Arden St, Opoho, house.
The black beech was about 60cm high and in a green rectangular pot.
• A blue 2007 Suzuki moped, registration number 90YUN, was stolen from Clyde St in North Dunedin between 2pm on Saturday and 9.30pm on Sunday.
• A child's blue metal balance bike was taken from long grass alongside the cycle path near Ravensbourne on Saturday.
A woman who had been cycling on the path with her 4-year-old son put his bike in long grass when he tired. She then ''doubled'' him home. When the mother returned for the bike two hours later, it was gone. The bike had hard plastic wheels and was taken between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
• The lock on a car parked in the ''bull ring'' car park in Whare Flat was jemmied and a make-up bag, black handbag and black wallet, with about $200 cash, were stolen.
