University of Otago student Vicki Alderson-Wallace will further her research into improving the diversity of forests after being awarded one of six environmental scholarships.

She will spend 12 weeks helping to re-measure the totara trial at Tapapakanga Regional Park through Scion Research, at Rotorua.

The BAYERBoost scholarship would enable her to develop her scientific research skills, broaden her scientific knowledge and further her interest in New Zealand ecology, she said.

She would also learn new skills including the assessment of tree characteristics in the field, such as growth characteristics and subjective ratings of tree form, and branching.

She would also undertake data analysis and presentation with forest biometricians and the evaluation of trial results and how this would contribute to a future vision of planted indigenous forests.

Ms Alderson-Wallace would receive between $3000 and $6000 in grants through the scholarship.
