For the first time in 30 years, Queen's High School canteen worker Chris Obbeek has donned the school's uniform.

Ms Obbeek was one of 13 support staff at the school who participated in a role-reversal mufti day yesterday to raise funds for recovery work in Fiji after it was hit by a cyclone at the end of February.

Ms Obbeek joked the new uniform was a ‘‘huge improvement'' on the ‘‘horrible grey'' uniform of the 1970s.

‘‘I might have stayed at school longer had I had one like this.''She was not the only former pupil turned staff member to wear the uniform.

Samara Kelly-Willcock, a support worker at the school since 2012, said she had been told off twice yesterday for leaving the classroom.

The uniformed staff were outnumbered by about 400 pupils at the school who wore mufti.

Event organiser Yvonne Covey said the mufti day was an opportunity to raise money for Fiji, as well as fulfil her personal wish of letting the pupils see support staff in a ‘‘different light''.

Principal Di Carter said the uniform worn by support staff was new and would be phased in to be worn by all pupils over the next few years.

It was hoped the mufti day would raise $700.
