Global warming has not yet caused sea levels to rise to the point where the streets of Port Chalmers are filled with water.
So residents were a little surprised to see a killer whale, a shark, some jellyfish, a few crabs and even a deep sea diver making their way down Albertson Ave yesterday.
Pupils from Port Chalmers School, Pūrūkaunui School, Port Chalmers Kindergarten and Pioneers Koputai Early Childhood Education Centre dressed up to celebrate the end of the West Harbour Arts Charitable Trust artist in residence programme.
Trust secretary Octavia Cook said this year’s artist in residence was Edith Amituanai, of Auckland.
She spent 10 days in the area, teaching pupils about art, and the parade was filled with the creations the pupils had made during those classes.
"The theme this year is nautical and it incorporates what the children love most about their harbour," Ms Cook said.
The parade had been going for more than 20 years and had become a welcomed annual event in the community.
"It’s a spectacle which aims to bring the community together."
