Search called off at Brighton

The search for a surfer reportedly in trouble near Brighton Beach has been called off tonight as police work to confirm whether it was a false alarm.

A rescue helicopter was called to the scene after a passerby spotted someone in trouble near Big Rock between Brighton and Ocean View about 5.30pm.

The helicopter performed a sweep of the beach but were unable to locate any sign of the surfer.

Police also failed to find any unaccounted for vehicles in the area and are yet to receive a missing persons report from the public.
