Second arrest in dog attack

A second person has been arrested after three pit bulls were allegedly set on two police officers called to a domestic dispute in Dunedin, but the dogs have still not been found.

The constables, a male and a female, went to the Wynyard St, South Dunedin house on Saturday after reports of a domestic incident.

As they went to arrest a male at the house, the three dogs were allegedly set on the officers who had to use pepper spray to ease the dogs' grip on their arms.

One constable was treated for five puncture wounds, and the other for three.

Acting Senior Sergeant Tania Baron said one of the officers was back at work yesterday, but the other's wounds were still too uncomfortable for the officer to return to work.

The dogs, which were already the subject of six complaints to animal control, were not at the property when animal control officers arrived on Saturday, and police were still trying to find them yesterday.

• A Dunedin man arrested following the incident has been remanded in custody until today.

Jayden Lombardi (19), unemployed, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on charges of assault using dogs as weapons against Kate Stewart and Ross Harris, resisting Constables Stewart and Harris and intimidating a person by following them.

Police were not opposing bail, duty lawyer Catherine Ure said.

But she told justice of the peace Graeme Brown the defendant was not seeking bail yesterday. He was remanded in custody by consent until today.
