Sprightly 92-year-old Gladys Walker said it was ''marvellous'' having five generations of her family together for the first time.

Four of Mrs Walker's female descendants visited her at Bradford Manor Rest Home in Dunedin yesterday.

The gathering was extra special for Tracy Kerehoma (42), of Christchurch, who had not seen her grandmother in 23 years.

She had recently moved to Christchurch from the North Island and her daughter, Chanelle Bruce (22), and granddaughter Tatiana Bruce (4) were visiting from Levin, making it the perfect opportunity for a gathering.

''It's really seizing the moment and the opportunity ... for my granddaughter.''

Tatiana had been excited about the visit.

''Since last night, all she has been saying is 'Nana, I have to go to bed early because I am going to Dunedin to see my great-nan and my great-great nan'.

''She's going to be a very lucky child when she is older to be able to look back and say I have a five-generation photo and I remember that day.''

A still mobile Mrs Walker, who raised her four children in Dunedin, said the visit was ''marvellous''.

She was still sprightly and on Tuesday night got into trouble for going outside when she was not meant to.

She said she still liked to get out and about.

''The trouble is when I run away, I come up in bad news,'' she said.

After a family photograph, she pushed Tatiana around on her mobility walker.

The visit was organised by her daughter, Glennys Karipa, also of Dunedin.

''Mum's getting on in age now and none of us know how long we have got and it's the first chance I've been able to get us all together,'' Mrs Karipa said.
