Shot captures mesmerising kelp

A picture of bull kelp which won the "work" category in the Earth Sciences New Zealand's annual photography competition.

The photographer, Simon Hayes, of Dunedin, took the picture while off the Otago coast, and said he was "mesmerised" watching it roll back and forth in the surf.

The judges of the competition said they specifically loved the picture for its "semi-abstract composition and beautiful simplicity".
