Show of support planned

Dunedin may host a vigil this Friday to organise a show of support for Syrian refugees, and suggest the city as one possible home for those who have fled the war torn country.

A meeting held yesterday settled on the idea, subject to approval by the Dunedin City Council.

Spokeswoman Alice Tocher said a group, which included Dunedin South MP Clare Curran, got together to consider action to develop Dunedin's response to the refugee crisis.

Ms Tocher said a Facebook page _ Dunedin Welcomes Refugees _ would be established for Dunedin people who wanted to help, give donations or volunteer, and the page would update information on the crisis.

It was hoped a 5.15pm vigil could be organised this Friday in the upper Octagon.

''We would like to see Dunedin at least offer support if the Government chooses to bring in refugees or up its quota.

''We would hope there would be resources in place for these people so they're not just thrown into a township or city.''

Ms Tocher said Dunedin should take some of any refugees that came.

''We've got space down here, and we've got that good old Kiwi southern hospitality.

''People do like to help where they can, so we could take advantage of that.''

Ms Curran said the meeting was ''a good first''.

''People are very determined.

''They want refugees to come to Dunedin.''
