Smoke smell triggers alert at Dunedin Hospital

Teams of firefighters descended on Dunedin Hospital this afternoon responding to alarm calls reporting a smell of smoke.

Five fire trucks and a ladder appliance were at the hospital and more than 100 people evacuated the building.

Fire crews had now given the all-clear after investigating the hospital floor by floor, Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Alex Norris said.

The alarm was raised at 11.46am and a further call soon after reported a smell of smoke.

Frederick St outside the hospital was closed during the alert and around 150 people were on the street.
