Snow warning for Dunedin motorway

MetService says a low pressure system that's moving in could bring snow to Dunedin's northern motorway overnight.

The ''intense low'' is forecast to move on to the South Island this evening, bringing heavy rain to parts of both main islands and widespread northwesterly gales.

Snow has begun falling on the Crown Range this evening, and the forecaster said falls were was expected on State Highway 1 between Dunedin and Waitati overnight, with up to 10cm near the summit.

Elsewhere, rain was expected to turn to snow about higher parts of the Lindis Pass, Crown Range road and the Milford road, with up to 20cm on the Crown Range Road and 15cm on the Lindis Pass.

The Milford road - SH94 - is closed overnight.

The ''significant storm'' was expected to move away to the southeast early tomorrow while an associated front moved eastwards across the North Island.

Warnings were in place for heavy rain in many places, including Westland, Fiordland, and the headwaters of Canterbury and Otago rivers and lakes.

Dunedin and Clutha could also expect some heavy rainfall overnight.
