But as Keith Knox found out more than 65 years ago, that can be a good thing.
The 86-year-old went to a dance in Macandrew Rd to meet a girl he had had his eye on for some time.
"But she didn't turn up. So I danced with Molly instead."
And the rest was history.
"I only wanted to dance with Molly from then on, and we met regularly to dance after that."
Mrs Knox (89) and Mr Knox celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at their Mosgiel home with family yesterday.
Five children, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren meant it was a crowded affair.
Amid the hive of activity, the couple reminisced on the good times and the bad, and what it was that kept them together through it all.
"We've had our moments," Mr Knox said.
"But really, I think it's the children which have kept us together," Mrs Knox said.
She was proud of her family and was excited there were more great-grandchildren on the way.
He agreed, but believed finding "the right woman" who could cook was also a secret to the success of a marriage.
"I would be half this size if she wasn't such a good cook," he said, rubbing his tummy.
But with a more serious tone, he said tolerance, a good sense of humour and having hobbies contributed to a strong marriage.
Either way, both were delighted with the milestone.
