Dunedin has lost its Crown limousine because of ''reduced demand'' for VIP travel in the South, a Department of Internal Affairs spokesman confirmed.

The Dunedin-based chauffeur position was disestablished in January and the vehicle shifted to Auckland, where ''demand for VIP services is high''.

A contractor was used for most journeys in the South.

A Christchurch-based Crown car could be used when necessary for security.

''The primary reason for closing the Dunedin position was in response to changes in demand and, while VIP transport costs have reduced, these will be offset by additional contractor charges,'' the spokesman said.
