Speeding drivers gave Dunedin police writer's cramp in a ticket blitz on the Northern Motorway yesterday afternoon.

The three officers on duty from 2.30pm could hardly keep up with the offending drivers during the 90-minute operation, said Acting Sergeant Andy Camp, of the strategic traffic unit in Dunedin.

"They certainly had a bit of writer's cramp at the end of it.''

The fastest vehicle clocked was a motorcycle, which was travelling at 156kmh.

The result of the short operation was disappointing, Sgt Camp said.

"There are more cars on the road at the moment, so you would think people would be driving more carefully, not worse.''
