Spikes used in city police pursuit

Road spikes were used to stop a car in a police pursuit in Dunedin yesterday morning.

Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said a police dog handler stopped a suspicious-looking car in Mulford St, Concord, about 4am and spoke to its occupants before they drove off.

The car's tyres were spiked in Kirkcaldy St, South Dunedin, and it came to a complete stop on Macandrew Rd, where the occupants ran off.

The police dog tracked a 19-year-old female passenger, who was arrested and charged with unlawfully entering a car.

The driver, a 23-year-old Dunedin man, was located later yesterday afternoon by police and arrested, charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop, Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said last night.

Both occupants would appear in the Dunedin District Court next Thursday, and Snr Sgt Aitken said it was possible the driver would face further charges.
