Award-winning former Otago Daily Times sports reporter Alistair McMurran has died.

Mr McMurran (80) collapsed and died from an apparent medical event this week while walking with a friend on the Kea Point Track at Mt Cook.

A former schoolteacher, Mr McMurran started working at the Otago Daily Times in 1975 and retired from fulltime reporting in 2014.

He continued to cover sport for the newspaper after his retirement and had filed a bowls report earlier this week.

He covered a variety of sports, though he specialised in club rugby, athletics, swimming and bowls.

Mr McMurran was also a keen traveller who visited about 150 countries, including North Korea.

An obituary will follow.
