You needed to get in quick if you were after strawberries at the last Otago Farmers Market before Christmas on Saturday, with some vendors selling out of the Christmas staple before 7am.

Cherries also proved popular, but were still available long after strawberries sold out.

Vendor John Gilchrist, of Roxburgh's Willowbrook Orchard, said it was the usual ''full on'' Christmas market.

''We ran out of strawberries and cherries very early,'' Mr Gilchrist said after the market.

It was a case of first in, first served, with marketgoers arriving as early as 6am to get the best pick of the produce, he said.

Dave Cook, from the Fruit Garden Orchard, of Roxburgh, said he sold about 750kg of cherries, making it his busiest farmers market of the year.

The market was at its most hectic before 8am, Mr Cook said.
