Sitting in front of crates that had been full of strawberries and cherries, Otago Farmers Market vendor John Gilchrist, of Roxburgh's Willowbrook Orchard, reads a Christmas card given to him by one of his regular customers. Photo by Jane Dawber.
Cherries also proved popular, but were still available long after strawberries sold out.
Vendor John Gilchrist, of Roxburgh's Willowbrook Orchard, said it was the usual ''full on'' Christmas market.
''We ran out of strawberries and cherries very early,'' Mr Gilchrist said after the market.
It was a case of first in, first served, with marketgoers arriving as early as 6am to get the best pick of the produce, he said.
Dave Cook, from the Fruit Garden Orchard, of Roxburgh, said he sold about 750kg of cherries, making it his busiest farmers market of the year.
The market was at its most hectic before 8am, Mr Cook said.
