An inter-dimensional jazz duo and a time-travelling countess were just some of the characters showcased by aspiring steampunk fans as part of the New Zealand International Science Festival.

"Jules Verne Steampunk and Train Day", at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum on Saturday, included a demonstration of how to put together a steampunk outfit economically, a costume competition for the public, and teapot racing.

The events were organised by the Dunedin Gasworks Guild of Gadgeteers - Steampunk Dunedin, with the assistance of the Dunedin Steampunk Society.

"Countess Coco Cogsworth" - Coco Brizzell (11), of Port Chalmers - won the costume contest.

Other costume prizes went to Marie Benson, of Dunedin, aka "Rosie Copperbottom", and Logan Park High School pupils Grace Cunningham (16) and Firth Deacon (15), whose personas were jazz musicians travelling between dimensions.

University of Otago student Rowan Stratford, who won a prize for her futuristic warrior costume, said she had found the steampunk community welcoming.

The final event, a play, featured a fictional interview between late-19th century journalist Nellie Bly and science fiction writer Jules Verne. It was written by organiser Sandy Cleary ,"The Countess Alexandrina Isabella Vladevescu", along with fellow steampunk fan Ross McKay.

Hardly scientific

Neither is sci fi. It's about the celebration of invention, and the Victorian age of Scientific Discovery. It's also the school holidays.
