Street light outages a 'mystery'

Aurora Energy is investigating reports of street lights going out between Mosgiel and Port Chalmers.

The lights are due to go back on around 11.30pm, a spokeswoman said.

"We've had reports dotted around Dunedin."

Police say the outages don't appear to be connected to any car crashes and are a "mystery".

Shortly before 10pm, a fire crew from St Kilda was called out to a burning power pole in Tainui, though it is unclear if the two events are connected.

A Fire Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said the crew managed to isolate the power, and it was now in the hands of the power company.

She was unsure what caused the pole to catch fire.
